Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation

“We’re not a research centre or a talking shop – we’re an action centre”

The Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation (ECCI) is based in an award-winning, low carbon hub in the heart of Edinburgh.

The centre makes low carbon progress happen by using in-house expertise and strong links within the data, clean tech and public sectors to deliver real world impact, from transforming game-changing start-ups into growth businesses to turning research insights into innovative local and urban projects.

Based in one of the world’s most climate-ambitious countries, with Scotland’s low carbon industries worth £11 billion a year, ECCI is also hosted by the University of Edinburgh, which is itself aiming to be zero carbon by 2040. ECCI is involved in the Edinburgh City Region Deal - a project which will see £230 million of funding invested in data-driven innovation over the next 10 years.

“Our value lies not only in what we know, but who we know. Our community of experts spans business and innovation support, carbon and climate policy, research, industry, project management and communications. Because our job is bringing people together, we speak your language, and theirs.” Andy Kerr, Executive Director, ECCI

Growing great low carbon businesses to kick-start a thriving future

ECCI is the official Scottish partner of Climate-KIC, Europe’s largest climate innovation initiative. Through its Climate-KIC programmes, the centre gives low carbon start-ups funding and support to build rock-solid business models and take their target markets by storm.

ECCI also offers budding Scottish entrepreneurs the chance to take part in ClimateLaunchpad, the world’s biggest clean technology ideas competition. It runs in more than 30 countries each year and this year ECCI will host the world final in Scotland. If you have a business idea with potential for climate impact, find out more and apply by 30 May.

“Ideas and innovators like the ones this competition generates are key to Scotland’s thriving low carbon industry. ECCI and the ClimateLaunchpad team will give our Scottish entrants everything we’ve got to help them reach the world finals.” Ed Craig, Deputy Director and Head of Innovation, ECCI
